I am studying abroad in NEW ZEALAND! I’ll be there for an entire year growing, thriving, learning, experiencing. I’ll be attending the University of Auckland, majoring in sociology and Māori studies.
“To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time” - James Baldwin. ☀️Baldwin took a sabbatical to France. New Zealand is my France.
My soul is drawn to New Zealand. While determining which country to go to, I actively researched countries that Black Americans have succeeded in. New Zealand was on every list I found. According to Black women who have participated in “Blaxit” (leaving the U.S. and going abroad), ‘Black’ “means something very different from ‘Black’ in America as ‘Black’ can mean Maori, Pacific Islander, African or African American”. Being ‘Black’ in New Zealand creates more unity than division. These Black American women were able to find a community amongst the genuinely kind Kiwis that make up most of New Zealand’s population.
A one-way ticket to NZ is easily $1000 and at least 13 hours traveling time.
This trip is truly an investment in my future and the future of this generation.
