Still waiting in appeal...

The picture on the left was taken last summer. I was healthy, happy, working full time, and enjoying adventures with my grandson. I had a great job and a busy, fulfilling family life.

This year? I’m facing a devastating health crisis.

It hurts to go on walks with my grandson. It hurts to cook dinner with my daughter. It hurts to play with my rescue dogs. It hurts to do my own laundry. It hurts to drive myself to my doctor’s appointments. It hurts to take a deep breath.

The picture on the top right is me now, and below it, the hospital procedure rooms that have become all too familiar.

This has been a game changer. I don’t recognize my own life anymore.

Many of you know me as an active Mom, Nini to a 10 year old, HR professional, former school board official, volunteer, adopter of rescue animals, and fierce advocate on social issues.

In late March of 2019, after experiencing worsening back, shoulder, and arm pain (and weeks of lack of sleep as a result), I fell asleep driving to work. Yup. It was pretty scary; thankfully I did not get into an accident.

Now, nearly 8 months later, after countless visits to my doctor and specialists and undergoing numerous tests, my medical team thinks I have an auto-immune problem that is affecting my joints, nerves, and muscles. A complete diagnosis and prognosis are still to be determined (which is why my long term disability insurer, Prudential, has denied my claim—I’m appealing it).

I’ve had multiple injections in my spine and shoulders, they recommend surgery on my elbows, I’m taking several medications, and physical therapy was abandoned because of my limited mobility and pain levels.

I’m recovering from a spinal ablation procedure that will kill nerves in my back, and should relieve some of the pain in 6-8 weeks. They’ll need to do this more than once for other parts of my back.

Asking for help is hard.

I’ve managed to go about 6 months without pay, but I’ve drained my 401K, my savings, and maxed out my credit cards. Two weeks ago my car broke down and couldn’t be repaired, so I donated it. I’m grateful to my daughter and son-in-law who have arranged for me to use one of their vehicles for a while so I can get to my medical appointments.

No one wants to ask for help, but how many of us can endure this kind of long-term health crisis without a paycheck, with the future of their job in limbo, with the future of their health insurance hanging in the balance, with medical bills piling up?

I’m lucky and grateful that I have a supportive family. That said, 2019 has been a strain on all of us—I haven’t been able to work since April and have been without a paycheck since June.

While I’m waiting for this appeal with Prudential to be resolved (this will take several months), I’m here to ask for your kindness and generosity so that I can pay my bills, keep up with the medical debt, and relieve some of the financial stress that makes it so hard to stay positive.

While I never thought I’d be crowdfunding for my own personal cause, here I am. Are you able to help?

Thank you for sharing my page, donating to my cause, or simply caring.

Appreciatively, Tina
