Sponsor an Afghan Refugee Family Mentor!

My name is Laura Wilhelm and I am looking for sponsors to become an International Rescue Committee Family Mentor for an Afghan refugee family settling in Silver Spring, MD. The International Rescue Committee requires each Family Mentor to make a one-time donation to the IRC of $600 to cover the costs of the Family Mentor Program.

 

I have completed the IRC's training, but need help raising $600 for the Family Mentor donation. I work for a DC area education nonprofit and also volunteer for Community Food Rescue, so while I spend a lot of time on volunteer and nonprofit work, I can't afford that on my own so I started a GoFundMe page for anyone interested in sponsoring me

 

The International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring, MD is helping resettle Afghan refugees and as part of this work, they train people to act as a newly arrived family's mentor. A mentor serves as the family's local friend and helps them adapt to American culture and integrate into the local community. Family Mentors and their mentees will cook together, practice English, figure out local transportation, where to shop, and more. Mentors commit to working with a refugee family for six months and will spend at least 2 hours per week with them.

All donations received by this campaign will go to the International Rescue Committee. The IRC assists newly arrived, future Americans, with a variety of services such as finding housing, and employment. The IRS also provides legal services such as Legal Permanent Residence applications and Citizenship applications.
