Support Urgent Repairs for Ledge Lighthouse
Donation protected
Iconic historic landmark, New London Ledge Lighthouse, is getting some long-overdue attention. Initial work on Ledge Lighthouse began in October, funded with grants obtained by the Ledge Light Foundation. Having opened up one wall, it appears the conditions are a bit more serious than initially thought. Built in 1909, the structure's interior steel beams have rusted, the expanded metal pushing against the bricks, causing cracks in the exterior that are letting water in!
In 1986, when Ledge Light was automated, a local friends group, the Ledge Light Foundation (LLF), stepped in to support maintenance activities at Ledge Lighthouse. This year, with two $100,000 grants, LLF began repairs. Their goal is to bolster the beam and fix the worst exterior crack. But because the damage is so serious, the costs now are estimated to run $25,000 over budget. Additional repairs must be made right now while the wall is open.
In 2015, the New London Maritime Society (NLMS) was granted ownership of the lighthouse from the federal government. Working jointly with the Ledge Light Foundation, NLMS is committed to continue repair efforts at Ledge Lighthouse! With our friends in a bind, we want to help!
New London Maritime Society has started this campaign to help pay for the $25,000 overrun.
Won't you contribute? Work is already underway, and we could greatly use your support!
