Survivors of Suicide and Friends - GC Marathon

Donation protected
On Sunday 2 July, I will be running the Gold Coast Marathon and my Mum will be running the Half Marathon to raise money for an organisation Survivors of Suicide and Friends.

Annette and Stuart Baker co-founders of Survivors of Suicide and Friends /Winter Solstice lost their daughter Mary to suicide in 2011. Suicide has a lasting impact on so many who are still living – and yet, Annette and Stuart struggled to find a community or a support group with shared experiences of a loved one dying by suicide.

While the organisation and event were created in the wake of loss, it has grown in the light of bringing people together with a common cause. To share, to remember and to ‘Shine a Light on the Darkest Night’.

On Wednesday 21 June 2023, Survivors of Suicide and Friends will host its eleventh Winter Solstice. The longest night of the year, this symbolic date reflects the way mental illness can plunge us into what some feel as inescapable darkness – giving way to light, hope and a brighter future.

Survivors of Suicide and Friends have gratefully benefitted from donations over the years. This enables the Winter Solstice event to remain free to all who attend.
