Thomas McCardle, Jr., 26, of Martins Ferry, Ohio passed away tragically May 20, 2018 at 6pm at Elk River Lenoir, NC. while attending a wedding celebration for friends. He was born Oct. 21, 1991 in Wheeling, WV a son of Thomas E. McCardle, Sr. and Barbara (Schrimp) McCardle.
McCardle is believed to have accidentally slid off a rock into the water at the bottom of Elk River Falls on Sunday. Officials believe very strong currents, because of heavy rain, dragged McCardle beneath the water.Kristin McDaniel and Gary Kennedy, of Lexington, North Carolina; Maddison McNeill and Matthew Glynn, of Boone, North Carolina; and Michael Austin Tysinger, of Lexington, North Carolina saw Thomas fall into the water and heroically formed a human chain to try to save him.
Recovery efforts concluded on May 30 just before noon in Avery County when Thomas’ body was recovered by the local sheriff department.
He was an employee S.T.A.R.T and the Martins Ferry School District and also a member of Abundant Life Baptist, Triadelphia, WV. Thomas was a graduate of Martins Ferry High School and moved on to Belmont Tech graduating in 2012 and worked in oil and gas. He had and had been recovering from a severe car accident that occurred three years ago. He was told he would be paralyzed from the neck down. By his faith in God and hard work physically he recovered from that hardship. He was an avidly into fitness and attended several local gyms. Thomas aspired to become a minister after becoming more involved with the church following his accident. He was truly a living miracle.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his brothers; David W. (Jennifer Green) McCardle and Dakota N. McCardle all of Martins Ferry and niece Brooklyn McCardle.
Friends will be received at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH, Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until time of service at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Thomas Redmen officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
