The Donor-Hood of the Traveling Kidneys
Donation protected
Most of you already know our story, but for those that don’t let me start off with a little introduction. I’m Pat Harrison, future living organ donor and I can’t begin to tell you how awesome it feels to write that. My brother, Robbie has been battling kidney disease and End Stage Renal Disease for most of his 31 young years. You may be thinking this is your typical sibling to sibling kidney transplant…but its so much more than that.
There are a total of 8 kidney donors involved in this unique, beautiful, and crazy rollercoaster of exchanging kidneys. Not so easy to find the perfect match for anyone awaiting a kidney transplant-we know, we’ve been waiting for 6 years this time around. Transplant teams around the country have already begun coordinating and carrying out successful transplants that are involved with this exchange. I can’t even begin to explain how it feels giving the ultimate gift of life to a complete stranger in Boston. Knowing the impact I will have on the recipient, their friends, their family, and overall life is truly a humbling experience.
Being able to help save my brother’s life is something I will forever be grateful for. Sadly, that won’t pay the bills. We are anticipating financial hardship and expenses due to the fact I’m the one who brings home the bacon (sorry to my vegetarian friends). Travel expenses are going to be a huge burden. After transplant Robbie has to go to San Diego twice a week for follow ups. Anything is everything…and anything can go a long way. A like, a share, a donation, or better yet-you go on to raise awareness around organ donation. Whichever you choose-we support you and love you.
Thank you to the Transplant Team at Sharp, numerous other transplant teams, and especially Robbie’s kidney donor from New Jersey.
