What Even is Endometriosis?!

Donation protected

Hi! My name is Reilly, and my best friend in the whole wide world is Ashley. We fit together like knuckle bones, and for as long as I've known her, she has been as indispensable as that to me.

But -- for as long as I've known Ashley -- she has suffered from a variety of painful, ceaseless symptoms, attached to a condition that we had no name for.  Over and over again, I have watched her endure severe menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding, fatigue, nausea, bowel and urinary problems, and -- quite simply -- general pain and discomfort, while trying to work, go to school, create art, spend time with her family and friends, and generally live her life.

(And, through all this, she was frequently ignored and dismissed by medical professionals... but, there have already been lots and lots of articles written about that all too-prevalent issue.)

On Thursday, March 28th, Ashley will be undergoing laparoscopic surgery to determine whether or not she has ENDOMETRIOSIS . Considered an "elective" surgery, this procedure is the only way to diagnose this condition and begin to alleviate the base line of pain Ashley lives with by removing endometriosis implants and scar tissue.

This is just a first step on the path to naming, understanding, and managing her condition. There is no cure for endometriosis. Complications can include infertility, an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer, ovarian cysts, inflammation, and more.

This surgery is expensive, and while Ashley does currently have health care, her deductible is $6,000 and will quickly be met. On top of her student loans and general expenses, this vital and necessary medical procedure will quickly become yet another financial burden.

Ashley will be establishing a payment plan for the costs she's responsible for, but as her friend, I'm not satisfied with the idea that she should bear this all on her own. I have never, for even a minute of a day, been without her support.

So, on Ashley's behalf, I am asking for help.

If you can forgo one fancy coffee drink, please consider donating $5. If you can turn a night on-the-town into a night of Netflix & chill, please consider donating $20.

All donations received will be applied toward the cost of the surgery.

Thanks so much for reading this and sharing it with your friends. Even if you can't donate, please consider sharing a message of support & good vibes. I'll keep this spot up-to-date with news of the surgery.

I love you, Ajax.
