"Running For Rome" Fundraiser – The Home Marathon
Donation protected
I have been training for 4 months for the Rome marathon on 29 March 2020. However, this has of course been cancelled due to the severe COVID-19 pandemic. I have therefore decided to run my own marathon in my hometown on the same day.
Italy, by far the hardest hit country in Europe, is facing a desperate fight against this disease. Its people are in dire need of our help.
The situation in Germany is also serious and Bavaria is more or less locked down, which means it's complicated to run here. People are still allowed out on their own, but I do not feel it is appropriate to be out running the streets for 4 hours at a time like this. I want people to stay at home as much as possible. So:
I AM GOING TO RUN THE "HOME MARATHON" IN MY GARDEN ON 29 MARCH 2020!
My original plan was to run something like 700 round laps of my garden. However, my test runs showed this was painful for my hips – and confusing (see crazed GPS picture above!). My GPS watch is not able to track me accurately. I therefore calculated a straight route from one end of the garden to the other: 42.2 metres, exactly 1,000th of the total 42.2 kilometre distance I need to run (see video). 500 times one way, 500 times the other way; then I will run to the "finish line" on the terrace. The event will be live streamed. If you have nothing else to do, get some popcorn and make sure I manage the 1,000!
My wife and daughter will be my only fans in the garden! Hopefully I'll have a few more online. :)
I would like to use this event to raise money for the Coronavirus Emergency Fund of Fondazione La Stampa – Specchio dei tempi , which will use the money immediately for professional medical equipment for emergency rooms and hospitals as well as other assistance for people in dire need at this time.
So PLEASE give generously and help spur me on to run 1,000 lengths of my garden. I can’t make it to Rome, but they do say all roads lead to Rome and now more than ever:
ROME IS WHERE THE HEART IS!
You obviously can’t be there to support me in person, but I will report on my garden marathon with streams and videos to prove that I (hopefully!) achieved my goal of running 42.2 kms on 29 March 2020.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! I will run for Rome and the people of Italy and beyond.
