Daniel was born 3 month premature and he has cerebral palsy. I have been blessed to be employed and to have medical benefits, and to be in a position to pay most of Daniel's many medical bills these past 17 years.
What the insurance does not pay for - I usually find a way to cover the cost. I built my own wheelchair ramp, I purchased a used hospital bed, I borrow adaptive equipment from the local clinic or I fabricate my own. I always find a way to make it happen because Daniel means everything to me.
There are numerous things I am hoping for to enhance Daniel’s life - I recently purchased a new handicapped conversion van, so that I don’t have to worry about getting Daniel where he wants or needs to go.
I’ve been able to get the loan for the new van, but the down payment, tax and license is stretching me to my financial limit.
My long term fantasy would be a new larger home that is designed for the long term care of a disabled person, but for the present, a new van and some adaptive remodeling will have to do.
Daniel loves to go to the movie theatre and to go see sporting events, and he also likes bowling and adaptive skiing - so we have gotten a lot of use out of our old van. Our new van will be a great weight off of my mind - knowing that I can easily transport Daniel anywhere he wants to go.
