Get Beth to Space School

953,054 miles travelled. 530 million people watching. 8 Days. 3 hours. 18 minutes. 35 seconds. Two men. One sentence.

“That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”

As a child, this immortal line captivated me, as it did with the hearts of millions at the time it was uttered. However, despite its occurrence being almost 50 years ago, the spirit of the 400,000 people involved in Apollo 11 continues to inspire myself to “reach for the stars”.

So you can imagine my utter joy when I was selected to participate in NASA's United Space School in July 2017. Now, that might be a small step for Neil Armstrong, but it is one heck of a giant leap for me. I want to make a difference in the science industry, and this would be a fantastic opportunity for me to begin that quest.

What exactly is the United Space School, I hear you ask? In a contextualised version, the USS is an interdisciplinary program that annually brings together up to 50 students from 25 different nations to study at the University of Clear Lake. Placements are at a premium and are very competitive, with national competitions held all over the world. I am only one two people from Wales who have been selected for this honour. Under the mentorship of engineers, scientists, astronauts and leaders in the aerospace industry, we come together to design our own Mission to Mars project. For example, the Habitation Team is responsible for monitoring the health of the crew when on the Mission, how to keep them healthy in a lower gravity environment and so forth. The Habitation team is also responsible for the design of a habitat for the crew to settle in once having landed on Mars, which will have to compete with the harsh surrounding Martian elements.

To enhance and build upon this instruction, we will participate in a variety of space-related activities at the Johnson Space Center, the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, the University of Houston Clear Lake, Rice University, Space Center Houston, the George Observatory at Brazos Bend State Park etc. These activities include a Full Crew Mission, a special project at the George Observatory, ARISS links with International Space Station and an international video-conference on life sciences, bio-astronautics, and aerospace medicine at a university and so much more.

Yes you have heard right. I will be working in Mission Control with NASA and its experts relating to their fields of study!

In order to do all this, to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience, I am in need of your help. Your sponsorship would be crucial to help get me there - to pay for the flights to Texas and to fund my place with the Host Family.

If you could help me in any way, I would be incredibly grateful- this is an incredible opportunity, one that I will take with me for the rest of my life,  in whichever aspect of science I wish to pursue. Thank you very much for reading and you can find out more and follow my adventure on my website, https://bethanyevans45.wixsite.com/getbethtospaceschool
