What is Haluan?
Haluan Hip Hop Dance Troupe is a hip-hop dance team based under the Filipino Student Association at University of California, Santa Cruz. Haluan has performed at various on and off-campus events including Multicultural Festival, Kresge Pride, Queer Fashion Show, VSA Banquet, and MESA Day in addition to competing at The Bridge, Collaboration, Prelude NorCal, and Breakthrough dance competitions taking place in the Bay Area. In contrast to other UCs in California who have multiple competitive teams, we are the only one. As the only competitive hip-hop team at UC Santa Cruz, Haluan has been a staple of the dance community within our university as well as the rest of Santa Cruz for 23 years now.
To us, Haluan is more than just a team, we are a family of students that share a love for art and expression. Haluan has given students a space to grow not only as dancers, but as leaders and individuals.
This team has worked so hard to make an impact in the lives of our team members and for the greater community. We want to do the most we can to ensure this space can provide the same home for future students and community members, so we need to raise as much money as we can in the next few months to prepare for the remainder of the year. WHY WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP!
As a group of students who do not receive funding except through fundraising on our own, all of the things we have planned for this year would be impossible to accomplish without any help. So here are our plans for what this money will go toward:
En Route: Urban Dance Showcase (April 30, 2016)
Most of the money we need will go towards our showcase that will be taking place on April 30, 2016. Due to our lack of any funding, we really need all the help we can get. This showcase began last year, and was a huge success as the first urban dance show, of this magnitude, in Santa Cruz history! Haluan invited teams from all over California to perform at Cabrillo College Crocker Theatre. Our goal was to bring the greater dance community to our small town so that we could share our love of hip-hop dance to Santa Cruz, a privilege we've never had access to in the past. A show like this costs a lot of money, so we need as many donations as we can in order to make this possible. These costs include but are not limited to:
-Venue costs
-Staffing costs
-Shirts
-Decorations
-Posters/Flyers
-Event Programs
-Food
Team Costs
Haluan has been gaining a lot of recognition in the hip-hop dance community, and we have been given a lot of opportunities to perform at shows and competitions in and outside of Santa Cruz. The remainder of the donations will go towards the costs for the team, such as:
-Competition fees
-Costumes for performances
-Props for performances
-Transportation costs
-Guest Choreographers
-Reserving studio space for practices
