Help Animals Like Petunia

On August 8, 2017 the Johnson County Amimal Shelter received a call that there was an injured dog who was possibly hit by a car. When the officers arrived at the scene they found a brown Pit Bull , paralized in her hind quarters, and in really bad shape. They took her right to the vet, where it was determined that she wasn't hit by a car, but had a lesion on her spine that was severely infected due to neglect, along other internal and external infections that needed to be treated immediately. Upon further inspection she was infested with fleas that lead to a skin condition called flea dermatitis which caused blisters, open sores and hair loss over her entire body. This poor girl was in rough shape. They treated her with anti-biotics and sent her back to the shelter for recovery. At the shelter the staff named her Petunia, and then worked tirelessly to treat her for fleas, bathe her in medicated shampoo, and give her some much needed nourishment. She let us poke and prod her without any resistance, we weren't sure if she had given up or was just good natured. Maybe a bit of both. Over the next 48 hrs, the staff could see that she was starting to become more active and getting more comfortable with us. She looked forward to her rub downs, being carried outside for some fresh air in the grass, getting regular treats. On August 10th, we recieved some great news, Gunnar"s Wheels agreed to donate a beautiful pink wheelchair for her! (see video in updates)
She has a long road ahead of her and a lot of healing still to do, but she has not giving up and neither have we!
Unfortunately, Petunia is not alone, we see hundreds of neglected/abused animals each year, not all in as bad shape as her, but some worse. We are a government run facility and rely heavily on public donations. Our medical bills for Petunia are mounting, we are not sure how much longer we can afford her treatment. Please help us save her and the many others that come in the door each year. No gift is too small. Every cent we recieve will go directly to the Johnson County Animal Shleter, Animal Welfare Fund, to cover medical costs for the negected and abused animals.
