Help for Giannoula Rigas

Donation protected
Giannoula "Joanne" Rigas, co owner of Boothbay Harbor House of Pizza along with her husband Marco, and known as Mama to many needs your help. Over the years she has adopted summer students who come to Boothbay Harbor for the summer, has travelled to Africa on multiple occasions and has been a support, encouragement and friend to many. It is not uncommon for her to show up with a pizza during times of grief. She has loved many so well. Right now, she needs a miracle. She needs your prayers and your financial support. Please see the timeline below on what has happened and where we are now:

July 2018 - She is hospitalized with pneumonia

September  - Giannoula travels to Greece to attend her nephews wedding with her daughter, Ntina Rigas.

October  - Begins to feel ill and is in an out of Doctors offices

October 31 - Catastrophic fire hits House of Pizza in the middle of the night. The family restaurant has been closed since then, only compounding the financial distress and personal stress.

November- Ntina and Giannoula try to fly home but she nearly fainted and was not permitted to fly home.  She was hospitalized as a result.

December - In and out of Doctors offices and given oxygen as a result of very low levels

Tuesday January 22 - Ntina had checked her oxygen level and it had dropped to 35 so she rushed her to the clinic where she was then rushed to the hospital. She was admitted and they began giving her the medication and oxygen she needed, because her body started to create carbon monoxide. Ntina has been with her all day and night in the hospital.

Friday January 25 - Around midnight Ntina had gone home to rest and a night nurse was staying with her.

Saturday January 26 - Around 5 am Ntina got a phone call to go back without knowing what was happening. When she arrived there were Doctors attending to Giannoula.  One came out to say that she had flatlined but they were able to revive her. She is now in critical condition in an induced coma hooked up to machines, her lungs are not in good shape and she cannot breathe on her own.

Sunday January 27 - Marko, her husband, travels to be with Giannoula

The medical system in Greece is very different than the US. She needs to be in an ICU but there are no beds available due to a terrible flu. Currently, she's in a makeshift ICU in her hospital room and is on a priority list in order to get her to a facility.

Giannoula's basic insurance does not cover international care, and her Greek insurance does not cover ICU. The cost per day to get Giannoula into ICU is $1500. 100% will go directly to the medical care.

There are a number of other initiatives underway including a call to the US Embassy in Athens for emergency support, with the ultimate goal getting her into a hospital ICU unit and then getting her home.

We  need your help. The family thanks you in advance for your kindness, consideration and prayers. THANK YOU.
