Sameena's UK Masters (physio) Fund

Hello Everyone,

My name is Sameena Anjum and I am writing to you in the hope of raising funds for my post-grad (masters) in physiotherapy in the UK. I would like to take sometime to share with you my journey. At a very young age, I lost an older brother from adrenalleukodystrophy, which causes rapid paralysis in the body. My brother was my rock, my support system and losing him has really left a bad scar for me. Luckily, when my brother was diagnosed with this rare neurological disorder a physiotherapist was able to offer some time into our lives. He survived from 6 months to 2 years. As a young child, I was very inspired by the work of the therapist. They not only delayed the progression of his condition but also motivated him and gave us the meaning of life. Here is a photo of my brother and you can see even being on a wheelchair he had the biggest smile on his face.

As I was growing up, the physiotherapist’s role had really touched my heart and soul. I decided I wanted to go into the rehab field work with children with disability and make a difference to the family as well as the child. Make those small moments be more valuable. As I turned 16 year old, I decided to start volunteering with Sunnybrook Hospital’s Holland centre where I assisted the physiotherapist providing therapy to children with disabilities. It was a life changing experience, the more I invested time the more it gave me inner peace of helping families and children. I later expanded my experience volunteering at the Veteran centre at Sunnybrook Hospital where I worked with war veteran patients suffering from Alzheimer and dementia. Later, I reached to Sunnybrook's St. John's Rehab working under the  physiotherapists who were specifically working with stroke, cardiac, cancer and muscoskeletal patients. I am attaching my hours accumulated and reference letter from my Volunteer resources at Sunnybrook Hospital. My point here is to prove to you that I have been a committed individual following my dreams to the best of my ability.

I was not a very strong individual academically, after my brother’s loss I failed grade 3. I gained more determination to be a physiotherapist as I volunteered more at Sunnybrook Hospital. I gained a degree in Kinesiology and Health Sciences have worked extremely hard to make it to the Dean Honour Roll List.  I got an opportunity of a life time to work with Sick Kids Hospital and York University on a research a project which I really valued. After graduating from york university, I finally gained admission to my dream university at Queen Margaret University in the UK. After my brother’s loss and medical expenses our financial situation has been quiet difficult. A single mom also has brought me up and now our biggest concern is the financial struggle as a single parent my mom’s income did not meet the sufficient amount for us to qualify for a bank loan. We have borrowed money from several different sources, applied for scholarships and have applied for OSAP for studying aboard (truthfully is not a whole lot). I am currently falling $20,000 short and am really saddened as I got into my dream school, dream program and just the money that is really pushing us down.

I am here on gofundme.com to request for help, the smallest amount makes a huge difference in my life. I cannot appreciate god enough for giving me the will power to come this far, I am trying my best working two jobs to get me to save up for my post-grad. I will really would like to take the time to say thank you to all of you reading, supporting me and always cheering me on to follow my dreams and passion.

Sincerely,

Sameena Anjum
