March For Our Lives, Riverside, CA

Some of you may know me, others not.  My name is Lecia Elzig and I am one of the organizers March For Our Lives, Riverside, CA.  Although I described myself as an organizer, our march is being completely planned and driven by a team of eight high school students representing five high schools in western Riverside County.  They are the planners and I am really just a “worker bee” among a group of adults who are carrying out the behind the scenes operations of the march.  Our goal is to make the students’ vision a reality.

In case you are unfamiliar with March For Our Lives, it is an outcry of the brave student survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland, Florida. On March 24, the kids and families of March For Our Lives will take to the streets across the country to demand that their lives and safety become a priority and that we end gun violence and mass shootings in our schools today.

This is not a partisan issue; every parent wants their child to be safe at school.  This April will mark the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. In spite of the horror we saw in Columbine, these tragedies continue and are almost too many to count. They are unfortunate proof that whatever we’ve been doing as a nation to address this is not working.

In addition to the main march in Washington D.C., there are over 600 sibling marches across the U.S.  In Riverside, CA, we are expecting 5,000 marchers (based on Event Brite registrations).  There are numerous expenses associated with planning a march like this.  The street closures alone (which include an official traffic plan and hiring a traffic management company to erect and remove barricades) is a minumumof $5,000.  We also need to rent sound system equipment, print posters and banners, and pay for both city and county permits.

March For Our Lives Riverside is asking for your help.  Any amount you can spare will help us reach our goal and give our students the voice and platform to make their impassioned plea:  We must address this issue pro-actively and this must stop.  In the land of the free and home of the brave, children should be safe at school.

After the march, I will post an itemized list of exactly how the money was spent.  Any funds raised beyond what we need will be donated to the March For Our Lives organization.
