New Roots Project

All migrants, after reaching their final destination, try to create and establish New Roots in their host society.
Their voices need to be heard. Their stories need to be told.
My name is Kiril Kirkov and I am a graduate student of communication at Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff. Together with my friends Dessislaw Pajakoff, Murtaza Elham, and Mustafa Haj Omar, we developed our New Roots transnational and experimental visual project in Vienna, Austria.
In 2016, we made four documentary films about organizations that help refugees. In 2017, we decided to continue with our project, but this time, we wanted to let people share their own stories. The idea is to help migrants have the opportunity of self-representation and active social agency. In our work, we incorporate social science, media arts, and education. We teach basic audio-visual skills and storytelling techniques to our students, and then we organize field workshops. At the end of the process, we exhibit their original work.
Based on the successful design and execution of our first 2018-2019 experimental New Roots workshop and the support from the UN Refugee Agency and The Women’s Center of Vienna, we will continue developing our New Roots project with the purpose to make it permanent. The UN Refugee Agency will help us to select the future student groups; the Women’s Center of Vienna will provide us with classroom space in the downtown area; the 5th Vienna District administration will help us with exhibition space.
Our goal is to raise $7,000 in order to buy 10 refurbished camera kits and ship them to Vienna to be used for the upcoming 2019-2020 New Roots workshop and beyond.
