Hello
My name is Vassiliki Zoi and I was blessed to become an auntie to a wonderful little baby boy, almost 13 years ago. Everything was going on well until a disastrous evening. My precious angel fell in a diabetic coma and he was only 3 years old. The first days in hospital were the most scary in my whole life. Doctors were totally non optimistic. He was very young and they couldn’t tell which would be the consequences of this episode. My Thomas was in ER for several weeks until he managed to recover. The diagnose was Diabetes Type 1. But from these days, everything is different. He is insulin dependent from then. Thomas’s mum couldn’t manage the situation. His father left home when Thomas was only 6 months old and she was devastated. She blamed herself for everything. From that time and until even now she, herself, needs hospital care from time to time. That moment, when we left hospital I decided to take full responsibility of my baby boy. So I had to teach him to live with the disease. And be strong to keep managing in his life.
Me and my wonderful prince!
He has to wake up at 7:30 each morning, even when he hasn’t school so as to count himself and do the first injection of the day. He is very slim and skinny and he can’t do the injection by himself. Someone else must be all the time near him, so as to prevent a difficult situation. This makes it really hard for me , to work so expenses rise up.
Coming home after a 8-days stay in hospital.
He falls in coma quite often the last years. At that moments I have to take him immediately to hospital so as to get the treatment his organism needs. He has hypoglycaemia episodes almost every day and unfortunately frequently lead to insulin shocks. I give him 4 injections a day and every shot contains from 7,5 to 20 units of insulin.
All these years he fell in diabetic coma over 8 times. And he isn’t even 13 years old yet. Every time something bad like this happens, his life is in great danger.
The doctors, who take care of my angel, consulted me to make a special surgery to Thomas. This surgery is called Pancreatic Islet Transplantation and it can occur with many chances of success, in special medical centers and hospitals which are specialized in juvenile diabetes in USA. This surgery is the only possible way for my baby boy to live a quite normal life in the future. Unfortunately our financial status is very low and I can’t afford to cover the expenses. Here in Greece, everything is messed up. As you know the financial situation of the country is totally destroyed. The cost of the daily treatment for a diabetic kid is too ligh…. Only the cost of the surgery reaches the amount of $27,000 while the Hospital and all the other expenses for Tom and myself, to travel to USA and stay for 2-3 months to be right treated and recovered, overcomes $10,000.
Things are really difficult for my beloved Thomas. He can’t live a normal life. Tommy cannot do what most kids do. Doctors forbid him the most natural things for a boy in his age. He can’t run, play in the ground or swim in the sea. He can’t stay out under the sun and he gets tired easily. Although it is very difficult for my little prince to concentrate to his school lessons, he manages to be a good student. He can’t even go to a camp or on an excursion and he has to follow a very restricted program for his whole life. He has to be on a particular diet, without any sweets, candies, fried foods, ice-creams, or even bread products. He has a standard program on daily base to do his insulin injections and count the sugar level in his blood.
My wonderful little hero doesn’t complain. He always is with a big smile in his face, even in his worse days, when he has to be treated in the hospital. Children’s world can be really cruel sometimes. At school many children make fun of him and in public places many people look at him strange when he counts his blood sugar or does the injection.
Thomas is my precious angel. Please help me create a better future for him. You all, can make his life beautiful! I will be forever grateful to all of you! Any and all donations are appreciated. And if you are unable to donate, all I ask is that you keep Thomas in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for listening to me. I wish you all the best in your life, for you and your beloved ones.
I will keep you in touch for his condition.
Thank you once again
