The Homeless Period: Minneapolis

Donation protected
“No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

As I type this sentence, there are over 600,000 homeless women in America living on the streets, or struggling financially to make ends meet. Women united are strong, and empowering, and have beautiful stories that have the potential to inspire others. Utilizing my time, my energy, and my education, I hope to not only inspire others, but to make a difference within my community.

We have periods. Every month we are taxed by Mother Nature, and it is both a blessing and a curse. Why a curse? A box of tampons is roughly $7, and let’s suppose we go through 1 box per month. 12 boxes per year totals $84. The average woman will have 450 periods in her lifetime, which equals $3,150 spent on tampons alone. I chose not to factor in things like pads, panti-liners, new underwear, birth control, or ibuprofen. If a woman is financially burdened, the last thing she should be concerned with is buying a box of tampons.

My name is Andrea Amelse, and I’m a 22 year old student at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. I firmly believe that the selfless actions we take today can have significant impacts on the lives of others tomorrow. I want to contribute, inspire, and lift up our diverse community of women one box of tampons at a time.

If you choose to donate $30 or more, you have the option to e-mail me your address, and I will send you a mini button designed by yours truly. Wear this button with pride, and motivate others to take part! Depending on volume, button orders may take longer than expected to ship.

I will purchase and deliver all feminine hygiene products myself. So far, I’ve contacted over 15 shelters throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul, and plan to deliver these products as soon as funds become available. Footage, and documentation will be uploaded on my Facebook page, and this GoFundMe page. I will include links as they become available.
