The Wilderness Lake is an area of urban green space close to the centre of Porthcawl, one of South Wales’ most popular sea-side towns, which is situated midway between Cardiff and Swansea. The Lake is popular with both local residents and visitors to the town.
Originally part of an area known as the Wilderness Wetlands, the Lake is adjacent to the village of Nottage, and was developed as part of the Porthcawl storm water flood prevention scheme in 1971.
The scenic Wilderness site comprises a large lake, approximately 2ha in size, and is surrounded by woodland, grassed areas, children’s play area and skate bowl. Recently, bank and island restoration works have take place to enhance the visual landscape and the quality of the fishing available. Stone and wood sculptures have been erected to provide additional interest for visitors as they explore the park.
The site has a range of natural habitats which support a variety of animal and plant life. Open all year round the lake is a unique and delightful place to relax, enjoy, discover and explore.
The lake is excellent for coarse fishing for the amateur and match fisherman. Bream, tench, roach, and carp are some of the fish to be found in the Lake. The fishing is controlled and managed by Porthcawl Angling Association.
The past week the lake has had major issues with Oxygen depletion which as led to the lake losing a massive number of bream, roach and carp, we estimate we have removed 900KG of dead fish over 3 late evenings last week, a massive hit on the overall stock of the lake.
National Resources Wales have visited and taken samples which confirmed the extremely low Oxygen levels and also reccomeneded the urgent requirement for aerators to help produce oxygen, before it's too late and we lose the entire stock.
We're asking for your help to fund the aeration equiptment to get the oxygen levels back to the required percentages.
