Angelina. Bat Girl. George Middle School Mustang. No matter what name you call her she is full of life, laughter, and the best dance moves you could ask for!

I saw Angelina and her mother on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving for Parent/Teacher Conferences at George Middle School. She is an 8th grade student with Down Syndrome in my Intensive Skills classroom. Angelina was her usual sassy self--full of energy, hugs, and smiles! The next day she was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). At this time, it is known that Angelina will have a two and a half year treatment plan, as long as there are no complications. Although the prognosis for ALL is positive, it is an aggressive form of leukemia and treatment will be intense. She will likely be in the hospital for the good part of a year as she undergoes chemotherapy. This sudden diagnosis has turned the family’s life upside down. Angelina’s mother has to balance raising four children and working to pay the bills, along with this new reality of caring for a child with cancer. While we can’t take away the pain, we would like to alleviate some of the stress with regards to their daily living needs. This includes paying for bills, food, and travel costs to/from the hospital. We also want to raise enough money for Angelina to have her own iPad, so that she has something fun to fill her days while in the hospital.
