Ciales, Puerto Rico is a small town nestled in a mountain range located in the central part of the island that was severely impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. This municipality will probably be one of the last cities to have electricity restored. Meanwhile, families are depending on generators that have been donated by families from other municipalities that have gotten their electricity turned on.
I became very interested in assisting families that live in the outlying areas of Ciales who, according to press reports, have been severely impacted by hurricane Maria. These families will probably be the last to have their electric power restored and to have potable water.
AEG International based in Charlotte, N.C., manufactures FireFly, a "plug and play" solar powered lighting unit. The unit is built to operate for at least 12 hours daily for 5 years before its lithium battery needs replacing. AEGI has agreed to give our GoFundMe campaign special pricing which will maximize the number of units we'll be able to acquire. Besides the solar powered electrical systems the company also manufactures water filtration systems used extensively in Africa and by the US Military.
Our campaign goal is to raise $210,000 so we can provide a maximum number of units to the affected families who will be without electricity until mid 2018. Of course, the units will be handy to have any time that there is a loss of power or when future hurricanes strike in that sector.
The distribution of the systems to the families will be coordinated with the Mayor of Ciales, a religious leader and the Ciales Postmaster (or their reps). My ties to the island; I bleed the Red, White and Blue with the single Star that represents the island where I was born. Besides being born there, I worked at the San Juan office of the US Secret Service during the years
1963 thru 1976 . Additionally, I graduated from the InterAmerican Law School in San Juan, PR in1976. I have never been to Ciales and I do not have any family, friends or contacts there.
