Harambe the Gorilla was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo on Saturday 5-28-16 after a young boy fell in the animal's enclosure.
He was a 400-pound Western Lowland Gorilla who had celebrated his 17th birthday the day before before being killed. The child was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. "The child was not under attack but all sorts of things could happen," the zoo director stated after the incident. "He certainly was at risk."
Gorillas are an endangered species. There are several sub-species all of which face declining populations. Populations are estimated to be only a few thouand in the wild. The few thousand western lowland gorillas left in the wild are rapidly declining due to a number of factors that threaten its extinction. Such factors include deforestation, farming, hunting and are mostly due to expanding human settlements.
This campaign will help fund preserves that will create safe environments to prevent further hunting and deforestation of the Gorilla's natural habitat.
