2019 National Spelling Bee RSVBee

Dear Family and Friends,
As most of you know, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is approaching. Last year I became the second person ever from my school to win the Georgia State Spelling Bee and was blessed with the opportunity to participate in the prestigious competition. During my time in Washington D.C, I was able to meet spellers from across the world. I made new friends and memories that would last a lifetime. However, this year I do not have a sponsor to the event because I did not make it to the state competition. It was very disappointing and unsettling when I came to realize that this chapter of my life has come to an end.
Eventually I came to terms with the outcome and started to partake in other activities. I joined the track and field team at my school and also became a licensed soccer official. I even volunteered at my local spelling bee. There, I realized that my success at state last year had an impact on younger spellers.
Last week I received an invitation from RSVBee. For those of you who do not know, RSVBee is a program launched by Scripps before the 2018 National Spelling Bee to provide an additional pathway for spellers who have previously been declared champions of their local bee programs. I was hesitant to accept the invitation at first as I already have a heavy school load on top of all my new pursuits. However, after further thoughts, I realized that this is my last year to be eligible and another chance to inspire more spellers that may be watching me.
Even though I have had my streak of losses which has caused me much discouragement, I still managed to keep going and persevere. If I had not taken all the opportunities that have been presented to me, especially from all my teachers, I would not be where I am today. Just like any other sport, spelling bee requires hard work, dedication, perseverance, and patience. In sports, there are times when major athletes face defeat. If the spelling bee has taught me anything, it would be that nothing is for certain. If I have to set an example for others, I hope all young spellers will always do their best and never give up even if certain losses seem to be the biggest defeat at the time. Now I must do the same and play to the final whistle.
Now I have the opportunity to go to the nationals once more. This GoFundMe page will allow me to represent my school and the state of Georgia once again. I am still putting in two to three days a week studying spelling while still pursuing other passions. For those who have always supported me these past four years, I want to thank you again.I may not be able to promise you the result both you and I wish for, but I can promise you that I would do my very best. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Please keep me in your prayers. May God bless you all.
Sincerely,
Kyu Alegre
