The more you know your history, the more liberated you are. - Maya Angelou
Education sets the foundation for future opportunity. And as Aristotle said, "knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom". Harlem is full of children of diverse backgrounds with rich, proud histories. They should celebrate the unique cultures of their families to gain pride and confidence. Therefore, we want to support Ms. Benjamin and the students of PS 175 elementary school in Harlem by creating the Multicultural Club. Through the club, the students will get to share their families' cultures with their friends in educational activities featuring literature, language, food, and music.
The club will spark the children's curiosity to learn and read by allowing them to explore culture. The club will feature Spanish langauge classes and celebration of Latino food, music, and traditions (e.g., Quinceañeras, Las Piñatas, etc.). The club will also have a library of books featuring different cultures and main characters of color.
We will buy:
* Books from
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/lists/books-with-characters-of-color#
* Spanish-language materials and DVDs
* and Spanish-language books.
The funds raised will purchase Spanish language teaching materials and multicultural books. The goal of the club is to foster pride and understanding across the PS 175 community by celebrating different cultures that make Harlem and the school so great.
Sincerely,
The Harlem United Family Club (aka Harlem parents in support of our local schools)
