I'm Danielle, a 29-year old mom from New Zealand who is on a mission to bring worldwide attention to the suffering of Lolita. Lolita is a beautiful, intelligent, endangerd orca who was captured in 1970 and is still held in captivity at the Miami Seaquarium in terrible circumstances.
I would often see images of protesters carrying signs asking, "Could YOU live in a bathtub?" I was inspired by this message to do just that. On February 11th, I will be leaving my family to cross the ocean and spend 30 days in a bathtub outside the Seaquarium in Miami, Florida. When I arrive, I will be met by activists from Animal Activists Network, an animal rights organization based in Miami who regularly advocate for Lolita. They will be hosting me and supporting me every step of the way throughout my journey.
By embarking on this challenge, I will experience the same feelings of captivity, separation from my family, boredom and stress that Lolita endures every day. I don't believe anything like this has ever been done before and I'm hoping it will bring worldwide attention to Lolita's suffering. We are calling this event the #LivingLikeLolita bathtub challenge.
It will be incredibly difficult for me to be away from my family for such a long time, but I know that my son will someday understand and admire me for fighting for what I believe in in this very brave way!
We are hoping to raise sufficient funds to cover the cost of my flight to Miami and back, and other necessary expenses. If we come in under budget, any leftover funds will go directly into an account for Lolita's retirement.
PROJECTED COSTS:
Airfare: $1,500
Other: $2,000-$2,500 (Traveller's insurance, local transportation, bathtub/base, cell phone, misc.)
This event has already made the news in Miami and New Zealand. So many people have been encouraging and pledged their support! Please donate whatever you can---no amount is too small or too great---to help us make this historic event a reality for Lolita!
Sincerely,
Danielle Daals
