NC Dance Company protests HB2

Tax deductible
On March 23, House Bill 2  was signed into law in North Carolina by Governor Pat McCrory. As a result of HB2, people in North Carolina face barriers to living the full expression of their humanity. Artistic Director of Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance  , Heather Maloy, was in the midst of planning for her summer professional dance premiere based on the life of Zelda Fitzgerald. With news of HB2, she quickly changed course. Instead, Terpsicorps is devoting its season to protest, to aligning with those most affected by these laws, and to offering the Asheville community a profound artistic response to HB2.

On June 23-25 Terpsicorps will premier "TRANSFORM: A Response to HB2" at Asheville's Diana Wortham Theatre.

Directed by Heather Maloy, Terpsicorps is the contemporary ballet company that has inspired the Western North Carolina community for fourteen years with vivid, cutting-edge professional dance. This season Maloy turns her substantial talents to the exploration of transformation, human dignity, and the cost of compromise.

Maloy is known for choreography that is bold and unafraid, that tackles tough subjects with a unique blend of stunning visuals, riveting drama and athleticism, and compelling storytelling. Her work has been recognized and supported by The NC Arts Council, the Arts Council of Winston-Salem, the Asheville Area Arts Council and countless foundations, businesses and individuals. Employing critically acclaimed professional dancers from across the US and abroad, her shows command a full house year after year.

This summer’s professional show, “TRANSFORM”, aims to be a full expression of the organization’s vital core values, an act of creative resistance to laws of oppression. The work conveys individual stories of transformation, offering the audience a cross section of human experience across diverse struggles and issues. Maloy strives to press the audience to examine that no one person's struggle is more valid or deserving of our understanding than another, to celebrate the beauty and importance of living a full life in all of its forms. Transform aims to be a uniting force that embraces the pain and exaltation of the never-ending changes that make up the life of every human being.

This season comes at a pivotal time for Terpsicops as the organization has just opened The Academy at Terpsicorps, a professional training school for dancers in Asheville with a particular mission to offer dance at scholarship to low income families across the region. The mission of the new school is grounded in a deep commitment that any child might have the opportunity for self-realization.

Protest theatre has an incredible power to encourage great social change. Like anything else however, great work requires financial support. After a year of substantial construction and start up expense, generously funded in part through this very platform, Terpsicorps is starting out their season in greater financial need than they have encountered in more than a decade. The company needs to meet it's fund raising goals by mid-June to bring this profound statement to life. Employing world class dancers, creating visuals that inspire the mind, and marketing this project so that it can perform it's mission to its fullest is expensive but art can change the world!

Join us in this protest, in the effort to bring this artistic statement of support for the LGBT community to the stage. Gifts, both large and small, could make a huge impact. Thank you for helping us make a difference.
