Help Save Our Twin Lakes Homes

Our small community, Twin Lakes Sports Club located a few miles south of Crescent, Oklahoma consists of approximately 210 households. Contrary to our name, this is a low income community, consisting largely of older retirees and young families; living on fixed incomes or have minimum wage or slightly higher jobs. The majority of people moved here to enjoy the quiet, peaceful park-like setting, full of various wildlife and fishing.
Over the years our community, which is bordered on the south by the Cimarron River, has lost over 40 acres and approximately 32 homesites due to heavy rains and flooding eroding the north embankment of the river. One year ago this month, our community lost two homes, and a third is deemed unsafe due to erosion under a portion of the home. One of the homes lost had belonged to a single mother of two young children. By the grace of God, this mother had the foresight and ability to acquire another home that became available to purchase within our community. Fortunately, she and her two daughters had moved a short time prior to the river claiming her former home.
As it stands now, there are several homes that are in imminent danger in the event a major or "take action" flood should occur. It is just a matter of time; we just don't know when.
Several homeowners have looked diligently into different ways to stop the erosion. The most viable option is a palisades system. Unfortunately the cost is extremely high and we have been unable to get government assistance. In order to fund this system, the already low assessments would have to be increased considerably. This has caused a lot of concern to several of our residents, especially the older folks. It is a catch-22 situation; struggle and hope to be able to pay the higher assessments or face the possibility of losing your home to the river.
Any assistance in offsetting the cost of this palisades system is appreciated.
