Renee's Run Against Violence
Donation protected
Hi! I'm Renee and in July this year I will be running the Outback Marathon at Uluru to raise money for the Alice Springs Women's Shelter. The Shelter is one of the busiest women's shelters in the country per capita. They provide women and children a safe place to go when family and domestic violence becomes unbearable and in many cases life threatening. This year 'The Shelter' has already accommodated in excess of 1,100 women and their children. Unfortunately, the Shelter has also been forced to turn away more than 1600 women, because they lack the funding, staff and capacity to accomodate them.
At the end of July I will be running 42kms in the soft sand of the red centre in an effort to raise enough money to fund a safe, sensory play area for the ever growing number of children presenting to the shelter. The Shelter, whilst providing a safe environment, is in dire need of new facilities and I believe that the play area will make the vast outdoor space a place of laughter for both children and their mums, while they work hard to rebuild their lives. Any funds raised over the needed amount will go directly to the long list of other things the shelter is in urgent need of: fridges, bedding, towels, toiletries, feminine hygiene products...the list goes on. And on.
For my whole career I have worked in community services, passionately committed to creating safe, "functional" families. As someone who has also escaped a violent relationship many years ago, I remain steadfast in both my personal and professional commitment to help women and children break free and stay free from violence and this is a cause that will always remain very close to my heart.
Please help me exceed my target. 42kms is a long way to run, but it's for a great cause and every dollar makes a difference.
