Get the Radioactive Viking to Japan

Donation protected
Meet my lovely friend, Robert Maxwell, from Sydney, Australia. We're trying to get Robert to Japan to share his work at the World Archaeological Congress.

Robert, our Radioactive Viking, is a Ph.D candidate at the University of Sydney and is studying archaeology: he focuses on contemporary abandonment and has specialised in studying the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Chernobyl was one of the worst manmade disasters in history. And to learn from it, someone needs to study it. This is where Robert steps in.

Robert has been profiled a number of times recently and you can read about him and his work in National Geographic and the Huffington Post.

Robert now has an incredible opportunity to present his work at the World Archaeological Congress in Kyoto, Japan this August (www.wac8.org). His groundbreaking thinking and approach has earned him this chance, but he needs a bit of help to get him there.

Your help, through a donation via this page, will get Robert to Japan and share his work with the world. Funds raised here will help cover his airfare, food and accommodation and conference fees. We'll need to fundraise quickly so tickets can be booked and conference fees paid for.

Being a researcher, in a field that is only emerging and doesn't yet have the kind of recognition and backing other fields do, is pretty rough. Your donation will not only get Robert to this important conference, but also helps contribute to a better understanding of the world we live in today. As Robert himself said in the NatGeo interview, "Basically, history is what we said happened, but archaeology is the record of what actually happened. It's the only litmus test of what really happened in any century, including the 20th century".

For lots more photos, please check out his articles at National GeographicHuffington Post and Bored Panda. You can also follow Robert on Twitter.

Thanks for your interest and your help to get the Radioactive Viking to Japan!
