Hello everyone! My name is Wendy Shurlow. Chances are you don't know who I am but we all have a common bond. Darrin Morman. If you haven't heard yet he had a massive stroke on April 22nd. He was airlifted to U of M but wasn't expected to survive the flight. He did make it but is completely parlyzed on his entire right side, has speech and cognitive issues as well. The hospital throws a bunch of big words out like apraxia and aphasia.
He has worked really hard and is able to speak now but other than that there has been not much improvements so the hospital is sending him home. He is coming home on the 8th. Kim has not left his side but has been told to have the house wheelchair ready for him but with her being down there and their days revolving around therapy and tests there is no way she can do so.
This is where I am asking all of you for help. They need so so much to get the house ready and the hospital and insurance has not been at all helpful in that area. They do meet with a nurse this Sunday for a home visit. This will be both of thier first time out of the hospital since the stroke. The nurse will go through their house and tell Kim what she needs to do to it to make it so he can function. The boys are making a temporary makeshift ramp right now just to be able to get the wheelchair up into the house for the day. It is sure to be an awfully emotional day for all. While I do not know everything that he may need right now I know for sure a proper ramp, a bed with rails as he forgets he cant walk during the night and falls, some bathroom upgrades and idealy a cement pad in front of the house for her to park on. She thinks they are getting a scooter but if not he will need one of those as well.
If you have the resources to donate money that would be absolutely wonderful! If you are handy at all and can help with some remodeling of the house, if you own a business that would be willing to help out in anyway, if you even just have been through this all already with another loved one and know of where Kim can go for resources that is appreciated as well. She is flying blind right now and not sure which way is up!
I will try to do as much coordinating of things as I can since Kim is so occupied and just doesn't have the time right now. I can provide additional ways of contacting me if you want one.
They will adjust and figure out a new way of life that works but boy if we all could pull together and eliminate some of the stress they are having right now I know that they would appreiate it from the depths of their heart!
