Connecting Through Culture: A Film
Donation protected
This is a documentary that will give audiences a first-hand experience deep into the heart of the culture of Pingtung, Taiwan through the eyes of foreign travellers.
WHAT IS THE STORY?
This documentary is an exploration of the many different cultures and people that populate the province of Pingtung. During our 2 weeks in the country we will be travelling and exploring the many cultures in Taiwan, and how they relate to each other and our own ideas about these cultures. For all of us except for Samantha these experiences will be our first impressions of Taiwan and the culture within, and will follow our attempts to connect on a deeper level with the people. Samantha's journey however will be attempting to reconnect with her own cultures and ancestors.
WHAT IS THE PROJECT? TONE / STYLE?
This summer a group of students decided to take a step out of their comfort zone and enter a video contest in a country halfway across the globe, 9500 km to be exact. The contest is based in Samantha Huang's hometown of Pingtung, Taiwan. She is the writer and director of this short being filmed and produced.
Every year Pingtung hosts a local video contest with a new theme each year. This year the theme is voyage. The documentary will be 5-10 minute in length, and will be filmed over the course of 3 days allowing us to travel around the province as much as possible. This means our production schedule to remain relatively open which allows for unexpected experiences and events to occur while still keeping constraints on ourselves; both financially and mentally. During these 3 days the themes of culture discovery, appreciation for friendship, and connecting through a language barrier will all be explored in unique ways.
The style of a documentary like this is extremely important as the visuals will allow us to transport you the viewer right into the action with us. Because of this the editing will be a mixture of wide shots as establishing shots and close ups to connect the viewer with the culture and events that we will experience while there.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Taiwan is a beautiful country that I am proud to call home and wish to show the rest of the world what it offers. From beautiful landscapes of the small tropical island to the warm and welcoming people that inhabit the country Taiwan represents such a different culture that contrasts so much with what I have experienced in the western world. Through this short film I hope to collide both western and eastern worlds to show the difference between different lifestyles. In these short minutes I wish to capture the moments that differentiate us from borders to bringing us all together as a collective family from all around the world.
With the help of local institutions and businesses we will be able to explore the ultimate cultural experience. From the shops and roads I grew up on to the traditional buildings of Haka and indigenous people. This film will not only showcase my hometown, but the shared homes and lands of many others.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
As the contest is overseas there will be copious travel expenses we need help with. We’ve been able to self fund much of the budget ourselves, and have also been extremely lucky to partner with some wonderful people in Taiwan. These partnerships will provide us with housing, food, filming permits and transportation. But, we will need your help to get us to and from Taiwan as we have invested most of our money into the film already. Round trip flights cost approximately $1300 CAD. Our flights will be at the end of August, and we are hoping to purchase our tickets as soon as possible to avoid ticket fluctuation. The contest deadline is at the end October which allows us to utilize editing equipment provided by Capilano University's film program to do our post production. Post production includes editing, sound mixing and scoring.
We have a crew of 6, but only 5 will have the opportunity to go overseas, as our editor/publicist will be spending time with her family. However, we will be collaborating with the Tzu Hui Institute of Technology. The students from the Department of Digital Media Design will be working closely with us to share our experience.

WHO’S ASKING?
We are a group of Capilano University students who recently completed our second year in the Motion Picture Arts Program. But, more specifically we are a group of 6 beautiful filmmakers.
SAMANTHA HUANG
Director / Writer
Samantha Huang is a Taiwanese/Canadian filmmaker currently studying in the Motion Pictures Arts Program at Capilano University. She was born in Taiwan, but raised between Canada and Taiwan thus being influenced by both Western and Eastern cultures. After her second year at CapU, she finally decided it was time to make her debut film about colliding with the culture she was raised in and her hometown – Pingtung. After finding a crew she and her friends are able to step on an unforgettable journey halfway across the globe doing what they love most – filmmaking.
ERICA THUMM
Producer / 1st Assistant Director
Erica, a fairly outgoing individual with a unique sense of humour, has just completed her second, and final, year of the Motion Picture Arts program at Capilano University. She started her post secondary education in the Okanagan studying English, but soon realized becoming a novelist wouldn't fulfill her creative dreams. She stumbled upon the program in 2014 and has never once regretted pursuing film. With her finalization of post secondary she has taken the opportunity to join a rad crew with fellow alumni to develop a short in Taiwan. This not only satisfies her love of travel, but also includes working with great filmmakers, expanding her experience and gaining a phenomenal jump start to her career.
BO ROUCK
Director of Photography
Bo is a 19 year old filmmaker from Kelowna, BC who moved to Vancouver to pursue his dream of becoming a cinematographer. During his first 2 years attending the Motion Picture Arts Degree Program at Capilano University Bo has been able refine his skills. Along with his love for cinematography Bo also has a particular love of Tesla’s, Netflix and sleep: of which he lacks constantly. Luckily, his lack of sleep is combatted by extreme amounts of coffee. Bo connects to this film because of its deep cultural ties, something which he has always found fascinating.
NINA WAGNER
Camera Operator
Nina is a quiet yet quirky film student going in to her third year at Capilano University. Growing up in a small town in northern BC on a bee farm, she decided that she didn't want to spend the rest of her life on a farm and left for film school, finding her passion for filmmaking and cameras. Going on a constant wander throughout life Taiwan seems like the perfect adventure to expand her small town horizons.
HARRISON GREEN
Gaffer / Camera Operator
Born, raised, and spending most of his life in the lower mainland of Vancouver Harrison Green often seeks adventure. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints he has been unable to leave the continent. When he was approached about Taiwan he said yes, as this was his chance to travel, and also to gain the experience of a lifetime. Two years of film school at Capilano University have prepared him for this. With his light comedic tone Harrison keeps the group de-stressed and ready to go.
ADRIANA GUERRERO
Editor/ Publicist
Adriana Guerrero was born December 1993 (22) in Caracas, Venezuela. She graduated from Cristo Rey the Altamira School and moved to Vancouver, Canada in 2011. She is currently attending Capilano University in the Motion Picture Arts program. Adriana currently works in the locations department and occasionally as a lamp operator. Her ultimate goal is to become an editor and a director. Even though she won’t be able to attend the trip to Taiwan she would be helping her team in the organization of the film.
RISKS AND CHALLENGES
It goes without saying that we have some concerns regarding the production, but we've been working diligently to bypass any issues that may arise.
Our major concern would be funding. With any project, crowd-funded or not, we run the risk of not actually acquiring all of the necessary money. We have launched this campaign very early to be sure we give as much time to promote our project and, hopefully, reach our goal. We are determined to have our feet land in Taiwan.
On top of funding there are some concerns surrounding travel. We have allotted money aside to cover travel insurance as we will be bringing most of our gear from Canada, and then utilizing sound equipment from the technical institute we are banding with. There will be 4 of us travelling together which puts our own minds at ease; Samantha will be heading to Taiwan before the rest of the crew to spend time with her family.
The crew is confident we will be able to make our goal and make this dream a reality with your help!
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP!
We understand sometimes you just don't have the money to pitch in, but there are definitely other ways to lend a helping hand! Don't worry, any support from you is very much appreciated and doesn't go un-noticed.
