Huish Theater Renovation (Phase 1)
Donation protected
The Need
There has been a significant need for a venue of this type in the south end of Utah County for quite some
time. This is an idea whose time has come. The building is there. The plans are laid. Significant work has already been done. The project can be completed from public donations.
Karen’s Dream
Karen Taylor was the wife of Gordon Taylor, former mayor of Payson and a retired dentist who practiced in Payson for many years. Gordon, along with Larry Brown, were largely responsible for the renovation and restoration of the Peteetneet Academy building after it was abandoned in 1989 by the Nebo School District and was scheduled for the wrecking ball.
Karen loved both the visual and performing arts. In 2008 Gordon made a promise to her that he would purchase and resurrect the decrepit, vacant theater. She had a vision of making the Huish the epicenter of performance art at the south end of Utah County. He acquired the theater and the Huish Performing Arts and Cultural Education Center was born. "Do you realize what a job this is going to be? I'm 80 years old," he told her. He thought he ought to live like a "retired gentlemen." "I don't care, I want you to do it for me," she told him. And that was that. Karen passed away two days after Valentine's Day in 2010, and Gordon's resolve became watertight because of his wife's wish to see the Huish up and running again. Gordon passed away in January, 2016 and now it's up to the Board of Trustees to carry on.
The Goal
The goal of the Huish PACE Center is to provide a venue, not only for artistic expression, but for events that are educational, cultural, social and informational. The venue will serve a broad spectrum of uses including, but not limited to theater, festivals, competitions, DIY classes, music and dance classes and recitals, concerts,
exhibitions, comedy club, tumbling & gymnastics, scholarship pageants, business meetings and expos, and
much, much more.
The current need (phase 1) is to install public, ADA compliant restrooms in the rental space on the south side adjacent to the main entrance to the theater. A small performance venue will occupy the remaining 2 rental spaces.
We are in the process of setting up a web page which will be online soon and will contain lots of information about the entire project and plans. Our Facebook page is up and already to go.
The photo on this page shows the restoration work already done to the exterior of the building. A stage has been built in the old auditorium and we're ready to move forward.
There are many who have fond memories of attending movies at the Huish, snuggling on the back row with their significant other or just enjoying the great old movie theater atmosphere.
Together we can make this happen. Thank you for your generous donations.
