Urban Beehive Project
Spende geschützt
The Urban Beehive Project seeks to familiarize, engage
and educate the public about the value of honeybees
in food security and sustainability in our community.
Discussions with members of the local beekeeping
community and food production sector has reinforced
the vital importance of bees in pollinating crops,
contributing to agriculture and producing honey that is
vital to local food production. The Beehive project seeks
to promote general awareness of the importance of
bees, education to children and schools, and education
of potential beekeepers as an agricultural industry.
The project will implement four honeybee hives adjacent
to the existing urban gardens at the Farm Centre here
in Charlottetown. This location was very important to
us because of the proximity to downtown, close ties
to agriculture and the activities & events of the Farm
Centre. The hives themselves will feature plexi-glass
on two sides of the hives which will allow the public to
see how honey is being produced. We have a volunteer
beekeeper, Bruce Smith, who has offered his time to
maintain the bees, provide an educational session
about the hives and to harvest the honey in the fall.
Each hive is housed in individual sculptural structures
that are designed to animate the act of harvesting
honey and serve as a learning platform for the public.
Exploring other cities, we have seen how much a
sculpture can activate and engage a community and we
think these sculptural bee houses will make an event
and a destination for bee education and draw people
into the site.
Beyond the hives themselves, this project is going to
have a community wide reach. All the honey that is
harvested from the hives is going to be donated to the
Charlottetown food bank and soup kitchen. We also
intend to have a grand opening which will feature honey
based recipes from local restaurants and breweries.
