Superhero Dad’s Fight with ALS
Brad Handley and his wife Corrie were excited to share their life together after their marriage in 2012. Like other young couples, the desire to start a family was strong. Starting a family was a challenging process for Brad and Corrie and after many failed attempts, Baby Beckett finally arrived May 2015.
Unfortunately, in September of 2014 Brad was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease the same month Beckett was conceived. ALS will typically take a person’s life within 3-5 years from diagnosis. As the condition progresses, Beckett continues to be the glue that binds this family together.
Due to the progressive nature of the disease, Brad requires a number of assistive devices to support his daily activities. Home modifications, including lifts are needed. Financial support is necessary for Brad to attend specialist appointments in Calgary. He now requires a wheelchair accessible van to support these long trips. Brad is self-employed and is now unable to work due to failing mobility.
Brad knows he won’t be there for his family in the future. He will not be able to see his son grow up. He will not teach him how to skate, play catch or take him camping. All the things fathers dream of doing with their children won’t happen for Brad. Brad’s biggest fear is that he will leave his family with a crippling debt that will affect Beckett’s childhood and Corrie’s ability to provide as a single mother.
Brad and Corrie don’t want to burden others in their time of need, but know they have an unfortunate journey ahead of them and need your help. Whatever you can give to help this family would be greatly appreciated and your generosity will never be forgotten. In turn we hope that in the future we will be able to pay it forward.
