Flexible Seating for my Classroom

Hello! My name is Tammi Paulzine. I am a 6th grade teacher at Murray County Central Elementary School.
As I reflect on my students in my classroom last year, something that sticks out blatantly in my mind is how every time students were working independently or with partners/groups, they chose to work on a cold tile floor than at their desks. Recently, I have read many articles on flexible (also known as alternative) seating. Flexible seating empowers student choice, increases student engagement, and improves student achievement. Flexible seating allows students to choose a seat where they can be comfortable and that enables them to learn to their best potential. Our bodies aren't made to sit behind a desk for 6-8 hours. Instead of just having the option of sitting in chairs at their desks, they would have multiple options around the room. This is especially beneficial for students who have difficulty sitting for long periods of time or just need space to themselves. I hope to provide for my students some of the following: large area rugs, wobble seats, exercise balls/disks, yoga mats, beanbags, bench seating with pillows, high top tables with stools as well as low tables with rugs for floor seating (to name a few).
From what I've researched, those that have already implemented flexible seating have noticed that students gravitate towards seats that help them stay focused. They seem to know what works best for them. I love the idea of giving students ownership in their learning.
