Jim Vieira Travel Fund

The goal of this campaign is to raise money to offest the costs of Jim Vieira's travel to Columbia, SC, to participate in my "Forbidden Archaeology" class this fall. Vieira is perhaps best known for his role in the program "Search for the Lost Giants."
"Forbidden Archaeology" (ANT 291) will be organized around the premise that credible ideas about the human past can withstand scrutiny and challenges, while incorrect ideas can be shown to be incorrect. My goal is to give the students the confidence, tools, and information they need to critically evaluate ideas about the past.
Vieira will visit the class during our section on giants, talking about his experience investigating the origin and mystery of the accounts of "giant skeletons" that were so common in nineteenth century America. As anyone who reads my blog knows, I have a yet to meet an account of a "giant skeleton" that I feel stands up to scrutiny. It will be interesting to have Vieira in the class and compare notes.
I think that bringing Vieira to Columbia will greatly enhance the experience for all involved, facilitating a much broader range of interactions with my students than would be possible with participation via Skype.
The $1000 goal will cover round-trip airfare for Vieira, three nights in a hotel near campus (about $150/night), and other minor miscellanous expenses associated with his visit. This is not a paid lecture.
