Serpa's Guatemala Expedition

G'day there did you know the first chocolate bar was invented during the Mayan times in Guatemala?
Welcome to the fundraising page for 2016 study abroad trip to Antigua, Guatemala! This is a wonderful, unique, and attainable opportunity that will not only serve as invaluable work experience for my media course, but will also allow me to make an impact on a developing community and gain a better understanding of the world, all while developing skills related to my future career path as a professional filmmaker.
This is a very exciting trip as I will travel for the first time to the exotic Central American country of Guatemala.
I will be travelling to Guatemala with Actuality Media, with the aim to be creating a short documentary in a month timeframe which focuses on a local changemaker who is making a difference in the third world community.
The three changemakers whose stories we will be focusing on telling will be:
BiciTec (http://bicitec.org/language/en/)
EcoFiltro (http://www.ecofiltro.org/en)
Los Patojos (http://www.lospatojos.org.gt/)
The finished product will help publicise these lesser-known changemakers and raise awareness of the change they are bringing to the Antiguan community- potentially expanding the impact of their efforts and educating the audiences about their significance.
The incentive to gain film making experience, leadership skills whilst also giving back to the foreign community are all quinessential elements towards my decision to travel with Actuality Media. I will also gain a deeper, more informed understanding of the world and those who come from very different backgrounds. Unlike most other study abroad programs, the Documentary Outreach trip requires and encourages direct interaction and collaboration with the locals. This type of first-hand experience will allow me to step outside the perspective of your typical tourist, and will allow me to walk away with a raw, honest perspective as an active participant in the world.
This program is an opportunity that combines everything I need and want in an experience abroad. I am planning on covering about half of the total cost with personal savings and a potential grant, but I am still in need of some funding! If you would like to contribute to this one-of-a-kind opportunity abroad, just donate here on this site. I truly cannot participate in this trip without your help and support.. Any size donation is deeply appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and please contact me via Facebook or email (on request) if you have any questions or advice you would like to offer!
