Hi, my name is Robert Farley. I am a devoted family man with two incredible grown children. My daughter has a degree in theatre and costume design and is now studying for her master’s in education.
My son is a mechanical engineer. It is amazing to exchange knowledge with my son, to transition from teaching him through my years of experience to being taught by him through his new found knowledge.
He has recently gotten married and now we work together on home improvement projects to prepare for his soon-to-be growing family.
I also attend to the needs of my elderly mother and I am the sole provider for my family- my wife is a kind and gentle woman who is plagued with medical issues (depression, fibromyalgia and diabetes) which cause her limitations. We recently started hosting international exchange students after we became aware of some of the questionable arrangements some children were put in; we stepped in to provide a safe home and encourage a positive view of our country for our visitors.
As a dedicated citizen of my community, I have served as captain of my neighborhood watch for 16 years and between 2001 and 2005 I helped organize the McGruff Night-out against crime community information fair. I am also involved with the local theatre promoting the performing arts encouraging my daughter’s diligent work behind the scenes and cheering on young actors through audience management. I also co-chaired the city’s annual Christmas parade. I have served for 8 years as park board co-chairman and secretary, as well as a member at large with the abatement board. I currently serve as a board member of the Industrial and Zoning committee. For 30 years I have volunteered as a wildlife handler in rescue, rehab and release of predatory birds for the Alabama Wildlife Rescue Rehab. This means I am dispatched at a moment’s notice to help injured animals and birds. I also work with local rescue groups to help place stray pets. As a career, I have worked as a maintenance electrician at our local plant for the past 32 years.
In 2010 a doctor discovered a small spot after a routine checkup. It was positively diagnosed as prostate cancer. I have struggled with doctors since, they want to perform a quick fix, to cut, burn and poison my body to eliminate the problem- but I did my research. I followed the newest techniques from Europe and outlying countries and waited for these procedures to come to America. It has finally come to the point where I can’t put off more aggressive treatment any longer.
There is a new repair and rehab procedure that is non- invasive and requires less recovery time and costs ¼ the amount of its’ predecessors but for some reason is not currently covered by my insurance. They classify it as experimental, even though it’s been FDA approved. The cost for the procedure is $25,000 not including travel and lodging. The procedure will be performed 12 hours away in Sarasota FL and require a 2 night stay there. I will have 2 weeks of hard recovery and then another 2 weeks before I will be allowed to return to work.
Any assistance you can give is very much appreciated. Please help me help myself so that I can return to helping those around me. I look forward to tell other patients in the future that there is a better way of treatment available.
