2cities 1 mundo - Backpack Drive & Community service project.
Community service project
First and foremost, I want to thank all the people that have supported the project in some shape or form. The children and myself are forever grateful.
In the year 2013, I made the commitment to help children in ''Los tres Brazos", one of the most impoverished communities in the Dominican Republic capital city, go back to school with school supplies and backpacks. In collaboration with FUNDELOSA, a small public clinic that serves the Los Tres Brazos community to facilitate the distritbution of backpacks for children in need.
For the past 4 summers, we have collected and shipped donations with th help of my Mayer teacher colleagues, school community, family and friends. I have been amazed by their generosity in helping me ship boxes full of school supplies and backpacks for many high-needs children.
As a community effort from one urban city to another, I ask for your help in contributing to the project.
Big or small ($5, $10, $20) any contributions made toward this goal by JULY 8th will be greatly appreciated!
GOAL of $1200 will cover:
- 2 cases of 18 Inch Heavy Duty School Backpacks - Case Pack of 20 MGgear Bookbags
-Shipment cost from Chicago to Santo Dominican Republic
-Travel cost to Santo Domingo
* Backpack distribution
*Provide week-long youth empowerment
workshops to ages 8-12 at public health
clinic FUNDELOSA.

My trip 2015 Trip to Santo Domingo , DR when I got to distribute the backpacks in person
How this journey started...
It was summer 2012, during one of my visits to "Los Tres Brazos", one of the most impoverished communities in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. For many, it may not seem like the most pleasant place to be - compared to all the beautiful tourist sites in Dominican Republic. However, to me it's a home away from home.
School had already started and while sitting in the front steps of my grandmother's house, I asked my cousin why there were children hanging out in the streets rather than being in school. He mentioned to me that many poor families don't have enough resources to send children with backpacks and school supplies so they’d rather not send them until they gather the money. Being a teacher, I knew I had to do something! I looked at how fortunate I was to have had the opportunities in the US. I saw myself in those kids and it broke my heart because I knew I could have been one of them. At that moment, this journey of giving back began.
Below are some pictures of past school supplies distribution events at the non-for-profit organization FUNDELOSA in Los Tres Brazos, Santo Domingo.
