Akron Sustainer Project

Donation protected
The Akron Sustainer is a project involving an 8 x 20 foot shipping container built from reused and repurposed materials, acting as an educational hub for residents of Akron.  The main objective of the Akron Sustainer is to educate Akron residents on sustainability and green practices, in turn, minimizing our environmental impact on future generations.

The Akron Sustainer is a recipient of the SPARC Grant opportunity made possible by Torchbearers and the Knight Foundation. SPARC - Small Projects Achieving Real Change - aims to provide Torchbearer members a jump start opportunity to partner with outside community members/leaders and organizations through small, impactful, pop-up encounters or programming ideas. The goal will be fast, dynamic outward facing interactions with a focus on talent attraction and retention within Akron city limits.

Work began on the shipping container in January of this year, in preparation for the Home Builders Associations Home & Flower Show that took place in February.  We were part of a Tiny Village which consisted of  a tiny home and a shipping container turned into a cabin.  We were able to educate over 10,000 visitors on sustainability, as well as the shipping container movement happening around the world that is contributing to reuse and recycle concepts, turning empty material into beautiful, activated spaces.

Now we're in phase two of the Akron Sustainer.  Which is why we're here.  We need your help!  We plan to feature eco-friendly materials such as a solar panel, vegetative roof, rain barrels, and rainwater catchment system, to name a few. Workshops, hands on experiments, and displays will be provided through the programming of this project to educate, engage, and empower our residents on various sustainability topics. Many of these workshops will be focused on children, as oftentimes they are catalysts to change in a home, as well as the future stakeholders of our environment.

With your help, we will be able to achieve the goals listed above and more!  If you know us at all, you know we're extremely passionate about our community and the future of our children.  This project will be a driver for educating our youth, while propelling Akron residents into making better choices with our environment in mind.

Sustainable cities are proven to attract and retain talent. We plan to partner with other community organizations and leaders to achieve that goal through purposeful programming.

Note: The Akron Sustainer is currently located at the Cascade Lofts - at the corner of North and Howard streets in downtown Akron, also known as "NoHo."  See it in person at an event we're having on Saturday, October 1st from 5-9 pm!
