Help Robyn Rebuild And Recover
Robyn (half of West philly's beloved Black Orchid Foods) had a fire in her home this morning (July 11, 2016) and suffered some pretty gnarly burns and so did her house. Robyn is one of the most generous, caring, and welcoming people I have ever met, and she has opened her home to feed hundreds, if not thousands, of Philadelphians with her "meals to go" events over the years. We have all benefited from Robyn's presence in our community whether it's through eating her food, at the neighborhood events she organizes, or through her activism. Robyn is also way too proud to ask for money ever, so I am doing this with the consent of her partner, Mike. The $$ amount may change, as there hasn't been an insurance appraisal yet, but from what Robyn described to me it sounds as though their kitchen will need to be ripped down to the studs and rebuilt due to the fire damage. New ceiling, walls, cabinets, possibly appliances. A lot of stuff melted too. Additionally, Robyn's recovery is estimated at two weeks right now, which means 2 weeks of not being able to cook. I'm estimating their costs at ~$15,000 right now (insurance will cover some but not all of their rebuilding costs, and insurance will cover some but not all medical costs), but that will change and I'll update accordingly based on what Mike and Robyn request. What's important to know is that Robyn is expected to make a full recovery! And all of the other roommates (including the cats) are safe. She doesn't have a smartphone so no internet access right now, but feel free to message me for her number. Hearing from friends would brighten her day!
