What was Echoes Under Sunset?
For 4 years, Echoes was a place where comedians, artists, musicians and performers of all kinds could come together, not just to showcase their talent but also to enjoy a sense of community. It was a home away from home for so many people, an underground, cozy haven where everyone was welcomed - a rare thing in a big city like LA. We were like a family!
Our comedy open mic nights became an oasis for up and coming as well as seasoned comedians and comic writers. They came from all over to test new material, get stage time, network, exchange creative ideas, and produce their own shows. We also displayed the work of hundreds of artists and hosted storytelling nights, improv shows, burlesque shows, concerts, and countless parties. We even had a few weddings!
We also understood our responsibilty to the community, hosting fundraisers for social causes as well as for members of the Echoes family. People knew they could count on us.
Why did Echoes close?
Last December, the LAPD vice squad came in during one of our best comedy shows, responding to noise complaints. They also found numerous building code violations - which the landlord refused to fix. And the popularity of our shows meant the noise complaints kept coming, as did visits from the cops. We stayed afloat for a few more months, but our lease was cancelled on May 30th. It was a sad day indeed; over 300 people came to our closing night. And the question they asked over and over was - when are you guys reopening?
Why should we bring it back?
Because Jazmine and Christian miss you guys and want to make Echoes bigger and better than ever! We have a space in Little Tokyo / Arts District already picked out. It's in the middle of the action - the only thing missing from the area is a cool live entertainment venue. We plan to have a bigger, more welcoming space, a nicer stage, and better equipment - plus, we'll be able to make as much noise as we want and stay open till 2am!
What do we need from you?
Your support! Bringing Echoes back will be costly, since we'll need to build a new stage and a bar, put in flooring, purchase furniture, lighting and sound equipment, get licensing, and more. But it's doable with help from all of you!
SO PLEASE, DONATE TODAY! Echoes was unique place that this city needs back. Let's do it together!
