Evin Nolan Art Prize Fund

Donation protected
We hope you'll consider donating to the Evin Nolan Art Prize fund.

Evin Nolan (21 July 1930 – 22 July 2016) was a prolific Irish abstract painter and sculptor. He was much inspired by Henry Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, and Jacques Lipchitz. His work is often distinguished by vibrant colours and geometric forms.

His Wikipedia entry has lots of information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evin_Nolan

You can see some of his work here:

Note that several of the items shown there are more than 2-dimensional!

Evin got his start at the National College of Art in Kildare Street in the late 1940s, and two decades later he was an active member in the establishment of the Project Arts Centre in Abbey Street.

Now, his work can be found in collections of the Arts Council of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, University College Dublin, National University of Ireland Galway, St James's Hospital (Dublin), the Bank of Ireland, Raidió Teilifís Éireann, Crawford Art Gallery (Cork), and in numerous private collections. Public installations of his sculpture have included works put on permanent display at Dublin Airport, Castlebar (Co. Mayo), and Jordanstown (Co. Antrim).

Of his own ouvre he said, "My works are a unity of painting and sculpture: spatial-colour-structure. It is of real space and colour, as opposed to illusory space."

His creative vision continued to evolve throughout his life, from the early watercolours and oil landscapes of his youth to the dazzling abstract works displayed in his final one-man retrospective ‘Works 1984 to 1999’ at the RHA Gallagher Gallery in Dublin in 1999.

He was a gentle soul, with a great sense of humour, and I don't think I ever heard a cross word out of him.  He knew all the classics, of art, literature and film, and was known to say "I'm a bit of a Laurel and Hardy man myself!"

We think a great way to honour his memory and his artistic legacy, as well as helping future generations of art students in Dublin, would be to set up an Evin Nolan Art Prize fund.  We hope you will feel moved to support this goal by making a donation here.  100% of the net funds received will go to a new art prize in his name.  Please help us to spread the word.  Obviously some details need to be worked out, but we are on it.

And next time you have a tipple, raise a glass to Evin!  He'd raise his for you in return if he could.
