Students in Poverty

Hello! My name is Hannah Winter, and I'm a first year elementary school teacher. This year, I am teaching 2nd graders in Richmond Public Schools, a highly impoverished area. Over 44% of the students in Richmond are below the level of poverty; in my elementary school, the poverty level is double that, and thousands of students in this area are homeless and hungry.

My goal is to provide my students with a welcoming and inviting classroom environment with as many tools as possible to make my students successful this year, and instill in them a love of learning that lasts in the years to come. Ideally, my classroom would come fully equipped with everything I would need, but in such a high area of need, classrooms are lacking a lot of things that teachers are expected to provide. As a first year teacher, I'm burdened with student loans, and I don't have many children's books, writing supplies, notebooks, whiteboards, office supplies, markers, crayons, pencils, paper, and so many other materials that I desperately need for my students.
