This is Eric LaTour, a 20 year old trans man in desperate need of top surgery.
Eric has spent the last two years trying to afford his top surgery.
Eric works full time to support his wife through beauty school.
Despite saving, selling his art, and odd jobs he has been unable to reach his goal.
Time, is Eric’s enemy.
The health consequences of binding are ruining his body.
to take a toll on Eric’s physical well being.
Prolonged chest binding :
1. Broken or fractured ribs that risk a punctured or collapsed lung.
2. Permanently damaged small blood vessels, increases the risk of blood clots.
3. Inflamed ribs and even risk of a heart attack.
4. Permanent back pain from compressing the spine.
During the years Eric has been binding he has fractured at least 5 ribs and experienced back pain that left him bed ridden for over a week.
Daily Eric experiences:
* Loss of breath
* Back pain throughout the back or shoulders
* Increased pain or pressure with deep breaths
* Hot flashes, heat stroke and dehydration
If Eric continues to bind for a prolonged amount of time these symptoms can prohibit his ability to move forward with surgery.
Eric has considered no longer binding to eliminate these physical side effects. However, despite the physical challenges, binding is associated with significant improvements in mood and mental health.
Many trans men explain that binding makes them feel less anxious, reduces dysphoria-related depression and lessens suicidal thoughts.
For Eric binding improves his overall emotional wellbeing and enables him to be in public safely with confidence.
Binding lessens the fear of being outed or retaliated against.
His body is not a reflection of who he is.
Top surgery is expensive and almost never covered my insurance. If Eric’s goal is reached the excess will be donated to another top surgery fund.
