HomesNOW! Bellingham is a group of volunteers working together to provide homes and shelter for the homeless in Bellingham and Whatcom County.
A CALL TO ACTION
Jim Peterson had a dream since 1993 to start solving homelessness, one person at a time.
HomesNOW! has a plan that is very simple. The plan is just to go from Point A to Point B, and that is to take a homeless person off the street and house them, plain and simple.
Jim Peterson presented this plan to the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1994 and they told Jim that the plan was too simple and would never work.
Jim never gave up on that dream. So Jim Peterson and Doug Gustafson started HomesNOW! to finally implement that dream. Last week we filed for 501c3 status and we received our certificate of incorporation.
Our plan is very simple. Build tiny homes and start putting people in them right away.
The next stage going forward is to start buying up boarded up homes and vacant lots
in Whatcom County and empower the homeless themselves to rehab the homes they are going to live in.
We're seeking donations in order for us to buy about 1 acre of land. We will use this land to build 4 Tiny Homes or to provide a safe place for people to park their car or camp.
In the meantime while we're waiting for enough donations to achieve that, and since winter is here, we're going to be focusing for the next few months on finding and providing cold weather gear for the homeless to survive the winter. By the time we have enough donations and find the piece of land we're looking for it will be spring and summer again and ideal for building.
