My Corrective Eye Surgery

Donation protected
I have worn glasses almost my entire life, but it’s only in the last few years that my eyesight has reached the point where my lack of vision has severely affected my day-to-day life. I’m no longer able to pursue activities that I once enjoyed.

I have to sit too close to the TV when I play video games. My pictures come out blurry. Reading gives me headaches, and the tiny stitches for embroidery may be the death of me.

It’s hard to explain how much my vision frightens me. The world is distorted, blurred, and over-bright. I almost can’t imagine everything around me being in focus, but I need it. I want to go back to my books, my games, my camera. I want to be able to see the person I’m talking to, and be able to finally read street signs.

The offender is Astigmatism , which is an imperfection in the curvature of your cornea — the clear, round dome covering the eye's iris and pupil — or in the shape of the eye's lens. This defect causes blurred vision due to the inability of the eye to focus on then sharpen objects in one's line of vision. Basically, every time you blink your eyes have to refocus like a lens zooming in and out.

Over the course of a day, I develop eye-strain because my eyes are trying to force the world into focus. Even driving has become unsafe, and I need to be able to go to work and school. It took me three tries to pass the vision exam to get my my license renewed.

My goal is to raise enough money to have LASIK eye surgery. While, for most people, glasses and/or contact lenses are enough to correct astigmatism, my vision is deteriorating too quickly to keep up with constant changes in prescription. The cost of a single pair of glasses would normally cost $400+ because astigmatism requires special lenses. Coupled with my nearsightedness, glasses are no longer enough to correct my vision.

This is a procedure that I have put off far too long because of costs. I work two part-time jobs, barely above minimum wage, and I’m in school. I don’t have the money for LASIK.

Now, I'm asking for help for something I desperately need to improve the quality of my life. It’s hard admitting that I need to rely on others, especially the generosity of strangers. I’m too used to making my own way, but I won’t allow my pride to get in the way of something I’ve need for so long.

The money I raise here will be going toward the eye surgery and aftercare. Many people are lucky to require only one surgery, but some require multiple. $4,500 will cover the cost of both eyes, exams, aftercare, and two years of any additional treatment I may need. I would appreciate any help that you can give.
