Recognising A Police Hero
I am an academic working in and from Melbourne, Australia. My friends and fellow members of the Australian Muslim community, Beylal Racheha and Adam Bowden, from Sydney, heard that a former NSW cop, Craig Campbell, had not been recognised for his bravery during the Cronulla riots and instead had been all but forgotten. So they tracked him down.
Like many Australians, they want this man recognised, and they want to help him get his life back on track.
Lots of people have contacted my friends Beylal and Adam, asking how they can help Craig.
Beylal and Adam are in regular contact with Craig. Until the end of February, this page will be used to send your donations directly to this unsung hero, using Craig's bank account. The funds will be used to help Craig with his day to day living expenses and to help him buy things like a car to help him find work.
"He was front and centre at the Cronulla riots, furiously swinging his police baton to stop a mob of crazed youths from bashing a Middle Eastern couple to death on a train. But Craig Campbell is now down and out, living in a caravan outside his parents' home on the NSW South Coast after leaving the force due to a breakdown from post-traumatic stress disorder. He lives on $440-a-week workers' compensation, his marriage disintegrated and he has been unable to hold down a job since..." (Sydney Morning Herald )
You can read more about Craig here and listen to Beylal talk about why Craig deserves our help, in a short interview with Sydney radio 2UE below.
Thank you for your donations, which will assist Beylal and Adam to recognise and help Craig.
