Help Janusz Dobrowolski walk again

On July 18, 2016 our dad, Janusz, endured a terrible accident. He fell off a ladder and ended up in Intensive Care Unit at the hospital with brain and spine injuries. He was in a coma and the doctors only gave him a few hours to live. Miraculously he came out of that coma and started responding to the team of doctors and nurses. Because of the intensity of the fall he shattered his spine and had to undergo spinal surgery. Metal rods had to be placed in order to rebuild what was left with the bones and vertebrae to regain his posture. Neurologically he is pretty much back to his old self, speaking, making jokes; something that only weeks ago seemed impossible. The team at the hospital have been calling him a ‘Miracle’ and his progression day by day, has been nothing more than incredible. He is now in the rehabilitation unit where physiotherapists are teaching him to maneuver from wheelchair to bed to help him regain his independence. Unfortunately Doctors have only given him a 5% chance that the he will walk again, but a CHANCE is all we need.
Our dad has been a seasoned soccer player for more than 35 years. He was in the Junior Euro Cup under 21 in 1982’ in Finland placing fourth place, in the Junior World Cup under 21 in 1983’ in Mexico where they won bronze, and for 15 years he played in the Professional Prime League in Poland for both Stal Mielec and Slask Wroclaw. Since 1991 he has played and coached the Polish soccer team, The White Eagles, here in Calgary; So Soccer has not only been his passion, it’s in his blood.
Losing the ability to use his legs is one of the worst tragedies that could have happened to him, but because of his ambition and determination, my mom, us kids, grandchildren and family, this is what keeps him going every single day. We have never seen more fire and passion in him, and his positive attitude is something everyone should take an example from. He is determined to walk again, to prove that anything is possible and to be able to take his grandchildren to the soccer field again.
The last few months have been very hard on our family, especially for our mom, Dorota. She has stopped working and has been by his side ever since the accident. Her presence is ever so needed as he is only getting basic rehab care and nothing is being done to help stimulate the nerves in his legs. She is giving him special massages a few times a day that have been shown to help with regaining of muscle and promoting nerve regeneration.
There have have been many advances in the spinal cord injury field, including stem cell treatments that can help in regaining nerves in areas that have lost it. Nerve stimulation is the key here, and these treatments along with others, if done daily, can help regain muscles and rebuild nerve production. This is his only chance.
The costs of these treatments are $100/session and he will have to go at least 40x/month. This process takes months and sometimes can go into years.
Along with these treatments which are very costly our dad will also need to upgrade to better equipment, ramps, and in-home conversions; the government only covers the most basic of equipment.
The costs to be able to upgrade his equipment from basic is in the range of $20k-$30k.
We are doing our best as a family but financially we can only do so much. With your help we hope to give our dad the best chance to walk again.
We also wanted to take this time to thank everyone for their support. This is has been the hardest thing our family has had to endure but if it wasn’t for your positive thoughts and prayers our dad wouldn't be where he is today.
